The Aurora, Ont.-based firm will develop a modular electric vehicle with the Israeli startup. Third-party manufacturers will be able to use the technology, which looks somewhat like a massive skateboard, to customize vehicles based on their own specifications and branding. (The Logic)
Talking point: This is the latest in a series of many EV initiatives from Magna, as more traditional automakers shift toward emissions-free vehicles. The company formed a joint venture with LG in December 2020 to build electric-car components, and it announced plans to build electric SUVs for EV startup Fisker two months earlier. The company is also working on EVs with Jaguar, Sony and Beijing-based Arcfox, and it’s considered a candidate to help build Apple’s highly anticipated autonomous car. Magna’s 88-year-old founder is also looking to capitalize on growing interest in electric vehicles: last week, he announced a self-financed project to build a single-seat electric three-wheeler in Toronto.
