The union has filed applications with the B.C. Labour Relations Board (BCLRB) to represent workers at a fulfilment centre in New Westminster and another in Delta, marking the next step in a union drive it announced last June. (The Logic)

Talking point: The BCLRB will automatically certify the union if Unifor has submitted cards of support representing at least 55 per cent of eligible workers. Support of between 45 per cent and 55 per cent will trigger a vote. “Our employees have the choice of whether or not to join a union,” Amazon spokesperson Barbara Agrait told The Logic by email. “The fact is, Amazon already offers what many unions are requesting: safe and inclusive workplaces, competitive pay, health benefits on day one, and opportunities for career growth.” The Teamsters union has tried organizing Amazon logistics workers elsewhere in Canada, but none have unionized. The unionization of an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island two years ago was expected to trigger a broader labour movement at the retail giant. That facility remains the only one in the U.S. to have unionized. While Amazon has tried and failed to overturn the union, Staten Island workers still haven’t negotiated a labour contract with the company.
