The Vancouver-based biotech said Eli Lilly has entered into a purchase agreement with the U.S. government to supply up to 600,000 doses of bebtelovimab for at least US$720 million. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the antibody for emergency use Friday. (The Logic)
Talking point: Eli Lilly partnered with AbCellera, using its technology to develop bebtelovimab and another COVID-19 therapy, bamlanivimab. The FDA recently limited the use of a combination treatment that uses the latter after it proved less effective against the Omicron variant, but preclinical data shows bebtelovimab is effective in fighting Omicron. AbCellera receives a royalty from partners’ sales of products it helps develop. In the nine months ending Sept. 30, 2021, AbCellera earned nearly $192.9 million in revenue from sales of bamlanivimab, according to its most recent quarterly report.
