Talking point: Regulators, consumer groups and smaller tech firms have honed in on app stores as a key competition issue. Apple faces lawsuits from Fortnite maker Epic Games and smartphone users over its fees and rules. The states’ case against Google also cites the company’s requirement that in-app purchases go through its billing service, which takes up to a 30 per cent cut, significantly more than authorities estimate developers would pay in an open market. As with previous antitrust lawsuits, Google has rejected regulators’ claims. In a blog post, senior director of public policy Wilson White claimed most Android devices come preloaded with two or more app stores, and users can simply download additional software via developer websites.
