Talking point: As iPhone sales decline, Apple has become increasingly reliant on its service business. The division’s revenues grew 30 per cent during the last fiscal year; App Store sales account for 35 per cent of the services business. A ruling on the lawsuit is still likely at least a year away, but Apple is facing growing legal pressure over how it structures its App Store. In March, Spotify filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission. In May, The New York Times editorial board compared Apple’s App Store practices to those in United States versus Microsoft, which led to the break-up of that tech giant. In terms of more short-term risks, Apple’s App Store practices are souring its relationship with some other major tech companies. Netflix, Spotify and Fortnite creator Epic Games have all started encouraging their customers to buy outside Apple’s app.
