The Canadian Armed Forces will be deployed to help battle fires in the province, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday night, after the fires reached the town of Jasper and the iconic Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Talking point: About 25,000 people were forced to leave Jasper earlier this week, as crews tried to divert fires—of which there are 175 actively burning across the province—away from the town. The blazes are threatening infrastructure in the area, including the Trans Mountain Pipeline, which runs through Jasper National Park. “Structural firefighters remain in town and are working to save as many structures as possible and to protect critical infrastructure, including the wastewater treatment plant, communications facilities, the Trans Mountain Pipeline and others,” Parks Canada posted on social media Wednesday night. The pipeline, which ships about 890,000 barrels of oil per day from Edmonton to the West Coast, was still operating, as of publication time.
