Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wants to give Canadians a tax break for Christmas by lifting the GST for two months on household essentials, starting right before the holiday season. He plans to follow that up by sending a $250 cheque to all working Canadians who made less than $150,000 in 2023. (The Logic)
Talking Point: The government’s idea of “essential” is far-reaching. It includes children’s clothing, diapers, groceries, restaurant meals and takeout. It also includes Christmas trees and video game consoles. But the last-minute adjustments could be tough on retailers who will have to change their payment systems, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada said, and it’s unclear how quickly Ottawa can really pull this off. The House of Commons has been completely logjammed for two months, and while the New Democrats are keen to push the tax break through, the Conservatives have called the free cheques inflationary. Both the NDP and Conservatives have pitched permanent tax cuts if they win the next election.
