Talking point: The former deputy prime minister to Justin Trudeau quit cabinet last September—for the second time—and said she would not seek re-election in the Toronto riding of University-Rosedale. At the time, Prime Minister Mark Carney tapped his erstwhile Liberal leadership rival to serve as Canada’s special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine. On Monday afternoon, Freeland announced she will step down from that post to serve as an unpaid adviser to Zelenskyy and would leave the House of Commons “in the coming weeks.” She is set to be the next CEO of the Rhodes Trust, an educational charity based at Oxford University, as of July 1.
