Talking point: Founded in 2018, Untether makes chips designed for the way modern AI systems work; its first commercial-ready units are now ready to ship. It’s one of several Canadian semiconductor startups founded by experienced industry executives that are part of the domestic sector’s revival. In May, Tenstorrent announced a US$200-million-plus round, while Alphawave AI raised £856 million in an IPO. Untether will use some of its new funding to develop its software platform; success in the semiconductor sector now rests on the code that accompanies the chips, Radical co-founder Tomi Poutanen told The Logic earlier this year. Applications for Untether’s products include autonomous vehicles and quantitative functions in financial services.
