After struggling through the pandemic, the subscription sports publication is adding more subscribers per day than ever, and has reached the significant one million subscribers milestone. Co-founder Adam Hansmann told CNBC that the pandemic shutdown—which stopped all sports in their tracks—“should have been the end for us.” (CNBC)
Talking point: The Athletic joins The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal as just a handful of news companies that have cracked the one million subscribers benchmark. The San Francisco-based company, whose first major market outside the United States was in Toronto, makes more than US$60 million in pure subscription revenue, which is enough to make its newsroom filled with marquee talent profitable (excluding additional operating costs). The company has raised US$139.5 million and doesn’t plan to raise any more funding. “Our investors have been and continue to be incredibly patient,” said co-founder Alex Mather.
