Talking point: The plan also dovetails with Rio Tinto’s efforts to transition to emissionless aluminum smelting using electrolysis technology by Elysis—a joint venture with Alcoa launched in 2018. Apple uses the carbon-free aluminum in some of its iPhone and laptop hardware. On Friday, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced $100 million for the Elysis project through the Strategic Response Fund. Ottawa had previously contributed $80 million. The Quebec aluminum sector has been hit hard by the Trump administration’s 50 per cent tariffs, but Jérôme Pécresse, the CEO of Rio Tinto’s aluminum and lithium division, told The Logic its U.S. aluminum exports have returned to previous levels.
