Ottawa is open to improving the Canada-United-States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) in ways that benefit all three countries, Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc wrote Monday in a letter to his American and Mexican counterparts that recommended the deal survive a mandatory review this summer. Talking point: LeBlanc and chief trade negotiator Janice Charette were in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to meet U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who has begun formal negotiations with Mexico for the review of CUSMA. Talks between Ottawa and Washington have stalled, with Canada reluctant to make more concessions. LeBlanc wrote that “discussions with the United States on addressing sectoral tariffs will be essential” alongside the CUSMA review. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed Tuesday that the Trump administration wants a 50 per cent content requirement for all CUSMA-eligible autos, but added that Canadian-made vehicles already hit that level on average.
