The organization will not accept new applications for its entrepreneurial programs or proceed with projects that have already been approved for funding. It cited the delay in passing the provincial budget as the reason for the decision. The six affected programs, which provide grants to small businesses, distributed a combined $41.1 million between 2013 and 2017. (Globe and Mail)
Talking point: The budget delay is due to a switch in government—Alberta’s new UCP Premier Jason Kenney has said he will not table a budget until the fall, following a summer review of the province’s finances. The government will assess Alberta Innovates’ funding programs against its mandate to “get Albertans back to work and attract major investors to the province,” said Justin Brattinga, a spokesperson for the economic development ministry. The government hasn’t said it will reduce funding for innovation for entrepreneurs, however. Changes of government in other provinces have resulted in such cuts. Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government cut funding to incubators in May, resulting in layoffs at Ontario Centres of Excellence and Communitech.
