The Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) applied for union certification with the Tribunal administratif du travail, saying the majority of employees at the company’s DXT4 sorting facility in the Montreal suburb of Laval had signed union cards. (The Logic)
Talking point: The CSN, one of the province’s three largest union federations, said workers cite “frenetic pace of work, woefully inadequate health and safety measures, and wages well below the norm at warehouses” at fulfillment centres. Should the tribunal endorse the workers’ request, they would become the first unionized Amazon employees in Canada—and only the second in North America, after Staten Island in 2022. Last week, Unifor paused its union applications at two Metro Vancouver Amazon centres, accusing the company of providing a “suspiciously high” number of workers.
