Talking point: Altman’s return to the board comes four months after a former board ousted him from the company. While he returned as chief executive days later, his director’s seat had been vacant pending the results of an investigation by a law firm; the probe concluded Altman hadn’t done anything that warranted his firing. OpenAI has since removed most of the board members who dismissed him, including key player Ilya Sutskever, its Canadian chief scientist. The three new directors join post-coup additions former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and Larry Summers, ex-U.S. treasury secretary. Simo’s Instacart and Taylor’s new startup Sierra both use OpenAI’s large language models in their products. So does Shopify, of which both are also directors.
