With one SMR already in the works at the site east of Toronto, Energy Minister Todd Smith announced the province wants to build three more. GE Hitachi, whose BWRX-300 reactor is the model currently in development, said it will supply those for the province’s Ontario Power Generation utility. Together, the four units are to produce 1,200 megawatts of electricity by the mid-2030s. (The Logic)
Talking point: Ontario is actively marketing its expertise and supply chain for BWRX-300 models around the world, especially in Eastern Europe. The key selling point for these “grid-scale” reactors is that they can be manufactured in factories and then installed at their destinations, enabling economies of scale. Earlier this week, Smith announced an even bigger plan for bespoke reactors at another Ontario nuclear site northwest of Toronto, saying the province needs more non-emitting energy for greener industry.
