The province announced that it’s beginning pre-development work to add to one of the largest nuclear generating stations in the world, rated at 6,550 megawatts. The work could take a decade or more, for environmental assessments, public consultations and cooperation with Indigenous communities. (The Logic)
Talking point: Ontario Energy Minister Todd Smith said climate-friendly electrification of industry is increasing demands for power, and more nuclear energy is needed to meet the needs and keep Ontario’s grid relatively green. Nuclear power consistently supplies about 8,500 megawatts of power in Ontario now, with much of the surge capacity at peak times provided by plants that burn natural gas. Bruce Power, which manages the current plant in Bruce County about 185 kilometres northwest of Toronto, is a joint venture of TC Energy, OMERS and worker groups.
