Premier Doug Ford and federal Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne said at a Monday press conference that the money will help GM upgrade its Ingersoll plant for its ongoing plans to build BrightDrop electric vans. It will also add a third shift to a plant in Oshawa to build the light-duty Chevrolet Silverado, making it the company’s only site for both light- and heavy-duty manufacturing. (The Logic)
Talking point: The announcement comes about 18 months after both governments each offered Ford Motor Canada $295 million to retool its Oakville, Ont. plant to make five EV models. Between fall 2020 and January 2021, GM had pledged $1 billion toward the CAMI plant and said it would invest $1 billion to $1.3 billion for the heavy- and light-duty trucks in Oshawa, expecting to hire 1,400 to 1,700 workers on top of the 300 stamping employees already there. The company said Monday it is now on track to have 2,600 hires since reopening the Oshawa plant. The CAMI location is set to make two electric-van models, the first starting in December, and Champagne said GM has promised “hundreds of millions” in R&D spending in Canada as part of the latest agreement.
