Mark Beehler, superintendent of New York’s Salamanca City Central School District, confirmed in an email that its high school has paused plans to bring Sally, a US$58,000 robot designed to help students with school work, into the classroom. Parents and the teachers’ union had raised concerns about privacy, as well as Realbotix’s connection to Intima, a subsidiary that makes sex dolls and adult AI products. Talking point: Realbotix was formed in 2024 when Toronto crypto company Tokens.com acquired Simulacra, a Las Vegas company famous for its realistic RealDoll sex dolls, for $16.7 million. Realbotix aimed to leverage Simulacra’s expertise in making realistic figures and lifelike synthetic skin to pivot to family-friendly robots that could work in health care, education and theme parks. In February, Realbotix announced plans to split its family-friendly and adult businesses into two separate companies. That transaction has yet to close, but the two companies are independently operated, Realbotix said in a release last week.
