The Transition Accelerator, an environmental think tank, launched the Centre for Industrial Policy to hold the government accountable for the sector-specific strategies Ottawa has rolled out, and help inform its future decisions. (The Logic)
Talking point: The government already published industrial policies for the auto and defence sectors, and is expected to announce others for electricity, AI and more. But the academic and policy community that previously supported and critiqued industrial strategy in Canada has largely disappeared, said Bentley Allan, the vice-president of future economy at the accelerator and a driving force behind the new centre. He hopes CIP can fill that void by using data to measure whether the government’s actions are working, and bringing people from different sectors together to come up with new ideas. Allan says the centre is in frequent contact with federal political staff, ministries and central agencies and has offered to collaborate with them on policy work.
