Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer will become minister of jobs, economy and innovation, Premier Jason Kenney announced Tuesday. The portfolio replaces the existing economic development ministry and incumbent Tanya Fir has been dropped from the provincial cabinet. (The Logic)
Talking point: Kenney’s post-pandemic plan, unveiled in June, includes $175 million for the province’s venture capital fund-of-funds, a new investment attraction agency, and entrepreneur-focused immigration programs. Innovation economy executives praised a new R&D grant announced last month, after criticizing the October 2019 decision to eliminate five existing tax credits. In addition to launching all those measures, Kenney said Schweitzer’s renamed ministry will also have as-yet-unspecified new responsibilities. It still falls to Alberta Transportation to oversee Toronto-based TransPod’s study of the possibility of building a hyperloop between Edmonton and Calgary. A May 2014 provincial study judged a conventional high-speed rail link between the cities unfeasible.
