Most of the amendments to the Competition Act proposed by NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh have been overtaken by subsequent legislation from the governing Liberals and aren’t needed, the House of Commons industry committee decided. The body agreed to send Singh’s Bill C-352 to the House as a shell, with its actual substance stripped out. (The Logic)
Talking point: Bill C-352 predated two recent rounds of Liberal-initiated changes to competition law, strengthening the powers of the Competition Bureau and limiting the justifications for major mergers. Where some elements didn’t match amendments that have already passed the House, committee members decided they went too far (such as an outright ban on mergers or acquisitions that would give one company more than 60 per cent market share) or might multiply the Competition Bureau’s work needlessly.
