Talking point: The online survey of 250 business leaders across Canada also said 65 per cent of them had started shipping goods or products to the U.S. before President Donald Trump was sworn in. Seventy per cent of respondents said a trade war would delay investments in technology needed to boost productivity, while 80 per cent were bracing for a recession. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has estimated that a 25 per cent tariff would shrink Canada’s GDP by 2.6 per cent. Eighty-two per cent said Canada should respond with targeted, dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., with 81 per cent saying they can deal with any “short-term pain” that would bring.
