Tesla is planning to introduce a new low-cost, long-life battery into the Model 3 sedan it’s building in China. The battery was primarily developed by a group of scientists at Dalhousie University in Halifax, where Tesla has been funding research since 2016. (Reuters)

Talking point: The new “million-mile” battery is critical to Tesla being able to meet its goal of bringing Model 3 prices in line with gasoline-powered sedans and turning a profit in the process. Jeff Dahn, who leads Tesla’s Halifax-based research lab, has been studying lithium-ion batteries since 1978, and won Canada’s top science prize for his work in 2017. Since that year, Dahn and his team have been named on at least six of Tesla’s patents. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been teasing investors and customers with the prospect of a new, cheap battery on the horizon. The firm’s years of work with Dahn and his team is now expected to culminate in that long-anticipated announcement later this year.
