Talking point: It’s a leap from prior ZEV goals of 10 per cent of sales per year by 2025, 30 per cent by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2040. And Canada wasn’t even on track to meet those targets, with ZEVs representing 3.4 per cent of new vehicle sales in the first half of 2020. Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said Canada will offer incentives, but will also pursue additional mandatory measures if needed. Wilkinson also said the government will consult with industry on more “regulatory mechanisms” like emissions standards. Meanwhile, General Motors said Tuesday it will retool its Ingersoll, Ont. plant for electric vans, ending its Chevrolet Equinox production earlier than expected.
