Treasury Board President Anita Anand will tackle both problems, according to the announcement from the governing party’s cabinet retreat in Halifax, with help from Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc on addressing internal trade barriers. (The Logic)
Talking point: The Bank of Canada has called Canada’s stagnant labour productivity an emergency, arising from weak business investment; Statistics Canada has said it’ll take a massive effort to fix. Anand said her working group will tackle both public- and private-sector productivity and have members from across Canada. Internal trade barriers, such as different regulations from province to province that businesses can have a hard time satisfying, are part of that picture, too. Anand and LeBlanc are to meet their provincial counterparts on Sept. 26 to start a new effort to harmonize.
