Talking point: Former Shark Tank star O’Leary has long been a proponent of sustainably mined bitcoin, but Bitzero’s marketing as a sustainable choice for mining crypto and powering AI is, in some ways, retro. Elon Musk, Michael Saylor and others spearheaded an initiative to rehabilitate Bitcoin’s polluting image in 2021, but the issue has received less attention amid a backlash against ESG investing and a switch by most other major crypto assets away from mining to a less energy-intensive system for determining which transactions are valid. Bitzero has four sites in three countries, which are powered by renewable energy sources such as hydro, solar and wind, as well as some natural gas and energy grid sources in North Dakota.
