Honda and Toyota produced 77 per cent of the passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks made in Canada last year compared to 44 per cent in 2016, says a report by the Trillium Network for Advanced Manufacturing, while the Detroit Three’s share fell to 23 per cent from 56 per cent. (The Logic)
Talking point: In 2024 and 2025, the two Japanese giants each assembled more vehicles at Ontario plants than Ford, General Motors and Chrysler parent company Stellantis combined, the report said, whereas a decade ago GM and Stellantis regularly joined them in producing more than 400,000 per year. “The shift in the proportion of vehicles produced by Japan-based companies when compared to U.S.-based companies over the past decade is the most significant change in the structure of the automotive industry in Canada since the mid-1980s,” said the report released Monday by the think tank based at Western University in London, Ont.
