The social media firm, owned by China’s ByteDance, violated data protection laws by transferring the data of European users to servers located in China, the Irish Data Protection Commission found. It ordered TikTok to bring its data processing into compliance within six months. (The Logic)
Talking point: TikTok denied it stored user data in China throughout the inquiry, but informed the commission in April that in fact, limited European user data had been transferred to the country, contrary to its evidence. The data has since been deleted, TikTok told the inquiry. In a statement, TikTok’s head of European government relations Christine Grahn said the decision only considers a short period of time from years ago and doesn’t take into account safeguards the company implemented through a $19-billion data security initiative in 2023. TikTok has never transferred data to Chinese authorities or received a request from them to do so, Grahn said.
