Laurel Broten resigned effective Sept. 1, more than a year before her term was set to expire, Internal Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for the arms-length federal investment agency, said in a post on X Monday. (The Logic, The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: Broten, a lawyer and former Ontario cabinet minister, has led Invest in Canada since 2022. The agency is responsible for attracting foreign direct investment to Canada, working with international investors and connecting them with governments and investment opportunities across the country. With Broten’s departure, Invest in Canada’s publicly listed leadership is reduced to board chair Karl Tabbakh, a partner at McCarthy Tétrault, whose term expires in November. The agency lists no other current executives. No successor to Breton has been named yet. Her resignation comes two weeks before the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto, which is being co-hosted by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, PSP Investments and the Prime Minister’s Office. The Globe and Mail reported that Broten had been involved in planning the summit, though its sources differed on the extent of her role. None of Invest in Canada, PSP Investments or CPP Investments responded to The Logic’s questions about whether Invest in Canada or Broten were involved in the preparations.
