Prime Minister Mark Carney says he extended the invitation to his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, in consultation with other G7 leaders, so that India could be at the table for discussions about energy security and critical minerals, among other issues. (The Logic)
Talking point: The invitation comes just eight months after the RCMP linked Indian government agents to allegations of murder, extortion and coercion in Canada. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said recently repairing Canada’s relationship with India, the world’s fifth largest economy, is part of the government’s efforts to diversify trade away from the United States. Carney is similarly working toward soothing tensions with China. In a call with Chinese Premier Li Qiang Thursday, the two agreed to “regularize” communications between their countries. The prime minister says farmers and fishers in Canada are being hit by Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola, seafood and other agriculture products, and plans to send in a trade commission to resolve the trade dispute.
