The company behind North America’s largest petroleum pipeline said it might take days to fully restore service to its Texas to New Jersey conduit after a cyberattack. The FBI said Darkside ransomware was responsible for compromising Colonial’s networks. (Bloomberg)
Talking point: The pipeline attack comes as pressure mounts on governments, including Canada’s, to amp up infrastructure cybersecurity, with hackers taking on bigger targets and striking at essential services. Public Safety Canada said earlier this year it would work across departments to prevent the loss of “compromised critical infrastructure.” However, the government has yet to spend money set aside in 2019 for the cybersecurity of Canada’s critical infrastructure, according to a National Post report last month.
