Talking point: Companies are adjusting their autonomous-vehicle program timelines. In April, Jim Hackett, Ford’s CEO, told the Detroit Economic Club, “We overestimated the arrival of autonomous vehicles.” The Information reported in June that GM’s US$19-billion self-driving car program had been plagued by glitches like near-collisions with other vehicles, difficulty steering and unexpected braking. My colleague Zane reported in February that Uber’s self-driving-car research team had faced issues around driving in extreme weather, navigating around large vehicles and detecting crosswalks. Ford and Volkswagen announced earlier in July that they would combine their self-driving programs.
