Talking point: Freeland has insisted the Liberal government will stick to its self-set fiscal guidelines, even as it pays for priority social and industrial programs. Business groups and right-leaning think tanks are skeptical it can do both. Ottawa also faces a long list of asks from industry groups that say federal financing can unlock Canadian business investment, for which the Liberals have been calling. Sectors looking to budget 2024 for support include semiconductor firms seeking manufacturing money; universities, colleges and researchers wanting science funding after last year’s disappointment; and miners vying for more critical minerals incentives. Both the Business Council of Canada and Canadian Chamber of Commerce want to make this the year of regulatory reform.
