Talking point: Carney has promised to table legislation soon that would let Ottawa identify and fast-track projects of “national interest.” B.C. has already moved on a similar bill which faced criticism from Indigenous groups, municipalities and environmentalists who say it undermines environmental standards and the government’s obligation to consult with First Nations. Ontario is facing similar pushback against its bill to fast track mining projects, including in the Ring of Fire. Getting major energy and infrastructure projects built is expected to dominate the agenda next week when Carney convenes the premiers for talks. He’s pledged to cut regulatory delays by more than half without sacrificing consultation with First Nations or environmental standards.
