Fengate Asset Management’s investment—the largest ever in the Canadian data centre industry, it said—includes newly raised capital from private equity firms Partners Group of Switzerland and Pantheon of the United Kingdom. Montreal-headquartered eStruxture has 15 data centres across Canada. (The Logic)
Talking point: CEO Todd Coleman founded eStruxture in 2017 after leaving data-centre giant Cologix. The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec invested heavily in the company alongside Fengate in eStruxture’s early days. Now, about $1.5 billion of the Fengate-led investment is to buy out the CDPQ and other investors, with $300 million left to fund further growth. Demand for artificial intelligence processing and cloud-based software has made data centres hot properties; the sector has seen a lot of ownership churn as specialist operators have picked up data centre portfolios from more generalist owners like telecom and real estate firms.
