Backed by $79.1 million from Canada’s Strategic Innovation Fund, the Swedish communications technology company plans to add 200 new jobs over five years and create 120 co-op positions a year. The funding is focused on Ericsson sites in Montreal and Ottawa and will support work on quantum communications, AI tools and 5G and 6G networks, the company said. (The Logic)
Talking point: Ericsson and the federal government first announced an agreement in principle more than 18 months ago; Ericsson’s plan at the time was said to be worth $470 million and neither the federal subsidy nor the number of promised jobs was settled. The Council of Canadian Innovators criticized the deal at the time, saying it pumped public money into jobs for people whose skills are already in high demand.
