The company’s three social platforms—Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp—were down for most of its combined 2.8 billion monthly active users beginning at noon ET on Monday. The outage follows allegations made on “60 Minutes” by Frances Haugen, a former Facebook product manager and now a company whistleblower, that the firm helped fuel the deadly Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot by prematurely turning off anti-misinformation safeguards when Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in the presidential election. Talking point: Haugen informed an investigation by The Wall Street Journal that revealed, among other things, that the company had planned to release an Instagram Kids app despite knowing it could be damaging to young users’ mental health. Haugen, who will testify in Congress on Tuesday said she doesn’t want people to hate the company; she wants “to save it.” Meanwhile, CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s personal wealth fell by almost US$7 billion as Facebook shares plummeted Monday. While the cause is unknown, it’s believed a DNS change is behind the global outage, which remains down as of publication time.
