The Big Four financial services firm, which is acting as a trustee for the collapsed Canadian crypto platform’s estate, is “actively investigating” the transfer of US$1.7 million in bitcoin from wallets thought to be beyond anyone’s control, according to a new document posted to its site for the case. Talking point: The mystery and intrigue around the infamous collapse of Quadriga deepens. In a saga that has since been made into a Netflix documentary, Quadriga CEO Gerald Cotten died in India in 2018, taking the passwords necessary to access the platform’s assets with him to the grave. The Ontario Securities Commission later determined most of the $169 million that was never recovered was lost as the result of fraud, not misplaced private keys. EY mistakenly sent the bitcoin that moved over the weekend to Quadriga’s private wallets in 2019. The crypto conspiracy theorists who have always been convinced Cotten never actually died are, of course, having a field day with this information.
