Talking point: Ottawa is using neither the carrot nor the stick it had last year to spur adoption of zero-emissions vehicles. The federal government last week postponed its EV sales mandate, which would have fined automakers if too few of their sales were EVs in 2026. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly told The Logic last week that the government would bring back EV purchase incentives, but wanted to find a solution that wouldn’t harm automakers facing higher U.S. tariffs. Meanwhile, hybrid vehicle sales and gas-powered vehicle sales rose 60.7 per cent and 5.6 per cent respectively, according to Statistics Canada, despite the economic anxiety surrounding tariffs.
