Talking point: “Every member of [USMCA] needs to match or exceed U.S. tariffs on Chinese products. Electric vehicles, batteries, and in particular, aluminum and steel, all need matching tariffs,” Ford, who is campaigning for re-election, said Tuesday in a speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C. “If they fail to do so, they should lose their seat at the table.” On Monday, President Donald Trump announced incoming 25 per cent tariffs on all foreign steel and aluminum, ending an exemption for Canada. Ford first floated the idea of securing a bilateral deal with the U.S. last November. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, meanwhile, told business leaders during a closed-door meeting in Toronto on Friday that “there are fences to mend with Mexico.”
