Talking point: “If [U.S. President Donald Trump] wants to destroy our auto sector and destroy our steel sector, and for Quebec, the aluminum sector, there won’t be a grain of critical minerals going south of the border. There won’t be one ounce of energy coming from Ontario,” Ford said Wednesday at a conference hosted by BMO and the Eurasia Group. He said the Constitution gives provinces jurisdiction over resources, adding, “We have the right to make sure that the people that buy our critical minerals are friends, not foes.” Ford suspended a plan to slap a 25 per cent surcharge on electricity exports to the U.S. in March. The Toronto Star reported U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had earlier warned the crowd in a virtual appearance that Trump was determined to move auto assembly plants to the U.S.
