The company told customers to expect a temporary $5 to $10 surcharge in their monthly bill. In a statement, Distributel called the decision “unavoidable given our growing and immense cost pressures, and the additional uncertainty from the Federal Cabinet’s announcement.” (The Logic)
Talking point: TekSavvy and Start.ca have also raised their prices following an August 15 cabinet decision that allows large telecommunication companies with their own networks to charge other companies for access. Several network carriers, including Rogers, Bell, Shaw and Telus, are petitioning a reversal of the decision. Distributel criticized this and the cabinet decision in its statement: “The government could have simply allowed the CRTC to proceed with its own review,” said CEO Matt Stein. “But by inserting this extra commentary, it’s created more confusion and uncertainty.”
