Talking point: Like other public crypto companies, Liquid Meta has had a rough year. The firm, which invests capital using decentralized finance strategies and had planned to launch a now-delayed platform for others to do the same, has seen its stock price decline about 83 per cent since its December 2021 launch. Liquid Meta also has a net balance of US$4.3 million stuck on the collapsed platform FTX—the prospects of recovering it are likely dim. In an interview, CEO Jonathan Wiesblatt said “our capital base is strong,” directing The Logic to the company’s balance sheet, which shows it would still have about US$18 million in assets even if the funds stuck on FTX are never recovered. The company would likely be exploring strategic alternatives even if FTX hadn’t collapsed, Wiesblatt said. Meanwhile, two former executives at FTX and sister trading firm Alameda have pleaded guilty to fraud and are cooperating with prosecutors; former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried has been released on US$250-million bail.
