The United Nations’ first “global stocktake” outlines the progress that nearly 200 countries have made since adopting the Paris Agreement in 2015. While there’s been some progress since then, the report shows the world is not on track to limit global warming to 1.5 C and that the window to do so is “rapidly narrowing.” (The Logic)
Talking point: To keep global warming below dangerous levels, the world needs to collectively reduce emissions by 43 per cent by 2030 and 60 per cent by 2035, the report reads. Canada is targeting a 40 to 45 per cent emissions reduction below 2005 levels by 2030 (it doesn’t yet have a 2035 goal). The UN report states that countries need to move much faster to reduce emissions. That will require improving policies, technology and financing. The report doesn’t rule out fossil fuels in a net-zero future, however, just those that are unabated—that is, fossil fuels that don’t have mechanisms to remove the bulk of their emissions.
