Jobless, introverted and socially awkward, perpetrator Brenton Tarrant spent much of his time visiting “discussion boards where there was discussion promoting extreme right-wing and ethno-nationalist views,” including on 4chan, 8chan and Google-owned YouTube, reads a 792-page report into the 2019 attack that killed 51 Muslim worshippers. Tarrant also modified his weapons using tutorials posted on the video-sharing site. (The Logic)

Talking point: As my colleague Catherine reported, the shooting has prompted a group of global investors with a combined $10.94 trillion in assets to pressure social media platforms to crack down on the spread of hateful online content. YouTube has since strengthened its hate speech policy and banned several of the channels mentioned in the report—including Canadian Stefan Molyneux. There is another Canadian connection in the report: in 2017, Tarrant gave just over $100 to Rebel News Network—one of the 14 donations he made to “far right, anti-immigration groups.” In a statement, Rebel said it discovered the donation in March 2019 and donated an equal amount to mosque-relief efforts in New Zealand.
