Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet business leaders in Mumbai this week before sitting down with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi as part of Canada’s efforts to secure a long-stalled trade deal with the world’s fastest-growing major economy. (The Logic)
Talking point: Last November, Carney and Modi agreed to resume talks for a comprehensive agreement that could double bilateral trade to $70 billion by 2030. India’s envoy to Ottawa said there could be a deal within the year. The U.S. trade war has given both countries a reason to work quickly. India reached a deal with the EU last month after nearly two decades of talks. India announced an interim deal with the U.S., but is now putting off talks as it studies the implications of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to strike down many of President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Canada and India halted trade talks in 2023 after then-prime minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused the Modi government of arranging the death of a Canadian Sikh activist in B.C., which India has denied.
