Talking point: Ottawa and Beijing had frosty relations even before China slapped steep tariffs on Canadian canola—a significant crop in the Prairies—and some other agricultural products in retaliation for Canada’s duties on steel, aluminum and Chinese-made EVs. Carney said he is building a relationship, not a “transaction,” and suggested there is room to talk about co-operation between the countries before they get to hot topics. “We’re starting from a very low base,” he said. Meanwhile, Carney said he is ready to restart talks with President Donald Trump, who called them off Friday over Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s anti-tariff ads, when the U.S. is “ready to sit down.” Trump said Saturday he would raise tariffs on Canada by 10 per cent. Ford plans to keep talking.
