Talking point: China brought in 100 per cent tariffs on Canadian canola oil and canola meal in March following an “anti-discrimination probe” it launched after Ottawa imposed steep tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, steel and aluminum last fall. The new duties set to take effect Thursday would also apply to seeds, which made up more than three-quarters of the $4.9 billion in Canadian canola exports to China in 2024. Vina Nadjibulla, vice-president of the Asia Pacific Foundation, argued China’s preliminary ruling in its anti-dumping investigation is meant to pressure negotiators as Canada nears its October deadline to review the EV tariffs. Separately, China launched a year-long anti-dumping probe into Canadian pea starch.
