Talking point: Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, who travelled with the prime minister, plans to return to Saudi Arabia with a delegation of Canadian pension funds to explore investment opportunities as well. The trip marked the first time a sitting Canadian prime minister has visited the country in 26 years, following a period of frosty relations. Carney and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman agreed to launch a council to foster more co-operation in a range of sectors, including trade and investment. Carney defended his engagement with Saudi Arabia despite human rights concerns, arguing that Canada exerts more influence by building relationships than by lecturing from afar.
